COMMUNITY PRAYER
Written by Bobbi Salkeld

Today we engage our imaginations with the story of Jesus’ ascension. It’s the very last sighting of Jesus by his first followers.

Just before the resurrected Jesus disappears from their sight, he says: You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you.

After this, Jesus is taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hides Jesus from their sight. (Acts 1:9)

In this short story, we have the disappearance and the appearance of God. The hiding and the finding. The coming and the going.

So much of our own faith story can relate to this. Moments when we feel God’s nearness, and moments when we wonder about God’s distance.

As we take a moment to hold together the needs in your community, let us imagine a God who both takes up space, and gives up space. And let us find comfort in knowing that God is at work in the going and God is at work in the coming.

Let us pray.

Loving God,
For those who struggle against violence and injustice
For those who long for peace in a place of intense conflict
For those who are in need and don’t know where their next meal will come from, where their strength will come from, where their support will come from

We pray -
In the coming and the going, Creator, empower us.
For those whose bodies fight against them and those who worry about loved ones
For those who have trouble at work, at school, at home, in relationships, in complex situations, in disorienting circumstances
For those whose challenges are without end

We pray -
In the coming and the going, Jesus, remember us.
For those who feel all aloneFor those who have trouble being who they are
For those who feel trapped, separated, defeated, destroyed by forces they cannot control

We pray -
In the coming and the going, Spirit, draw near to us.
And we hold the words of Christ as we close - You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. Come Lord Jesus, come.
Amen.
