EUCHARIST INVITATION
Written By Bobbi Salkeld
*McRoberts, Justin. May It Be So (p. 113). The Crown Publishing Group. Kindle Edition

Today on the First Sunday of Lent we gather around the Eucharist table. This is an open table and all are welcome. In his 40-day prayer book May It Be So, Justin McRoberts writes this prayer. It’s perfect for Lent.

May the work of change
never overshadow
or overwhelm
the bright vision of who
I am becoming.*

Consider the prayer alongside the story of the last meal Jesus shared with his close followers before he died.  On the night Jesus was betrayed, he took bread, gave thanks, and after he broke it he said, “Take. Eat. This is my body.” After supper, he did the same thing with the cup. He said, “Drink this, all of you. This is my blood.” In other words, the Eucharist is a bright sign of who we are becoming.

Betrayal will give way to love.
Violence to hospitality.
Death to the fullness of life.

Let us pray:
Jesus, like you we will face the work of change in our lives
And like you, we will suffer and it will be hard sometimes
And still, we pray:

May the work of change
never overshadow
or overwhelm
the bright vision of who
we are becoming.

May we be like you,
Christ of this meal
Christ of our relationships
Christ of this beautiful planet

AMEN.
