A CREED FOR A TIME OF CRISIS

In the tradition of the church, a creed is a list of essential “I believe” statements. Today, from our homes, we borrow the tradition of creed formation and speak together what I am calling “A Creed for a Time of Crisis.” 

This creed is modern and full of essential statements that we stand on in this particular moment in the life of our community, our city, and our world. As I read the “We believe” statements, I invite you to either listen and take them in or speak them out from wherever you are. 

Here it is: A Creed for a Time of Crisis. 

We believe … 
In God the intricate Creator 
Jesus the revolutionary friend
Spirit implanted and dwelling in all of life 

We believe … 
In the power of imagination 
The creativity of the body
An inner journey can set us free 

We believe …
In rest for the weary 
Kindness toward the stranger 
The abundant life of justice and simplicity  

We believe … 
That goodness is greater than evil 
Compassion opens the door to connection 
Changing our minds is a gift when we are tired

We believe … 
That isolation does not keep our hearts apart 
Beauty is in the folds of our ordinary lives
God’s love is everlasting and always flowing

We believe … 
All suffering can be a path for recovery 
Death is not the final chapter 
Resurrection awaits us every new day 
AMEN.
