PRAYER FOR NATIONAL DAY FOR TRUTH AND RECONCILIATION
By Scott Wall

This week, we will mark the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. For all of us - this day represents an opportunity to tell truth, to grieve the harm and loss caused by residential schools, and to commit ourselves to the work of shaping a more equitable future.

As a faith community that meets on Treaty 7 land, Commons recognizes that these moments invite us to examine our posture and position toward those around us. And this is why, as part of liturgy today, we pause and reflect on the need for healing in our communities. We pray in support of our Indigenous neighbours, friends, and siblings. And we ready ourselves for the labour of justice and relationship, following Jesus’ humble way.

So - as you look ahead to this week…pray with me now —

Creator that sustains all things,
Today we give thanks for this land we know - the way its soil, its water, its rolling plains and soaring mountains keep and bless all.
We give thanks for the original inhabitants of this land, our siblings who know and sense the deep sacredness of all creation — and have so much to teach us.
Give us grace to live with respect and mutuality, we pray.

Creator that renews and sets free,
Today we confess that our communities need peace.
We hear the cries for justice — we hear the requests for dignity and healing — we acknowledge the ways that promises and treaties have been broken.
And we pray for courage to seek reconciliation, to humbly work for equity, and to patiently walk in your non-violent way so that its goodness is known to all.

Creator that animates our shared story,
Today we ask for new imagination, to see ourselves being brought together, being shaped into the expansive Lodge you are building that welcomes all.
We celebrate that in stories told, confessions made, and righteousness upheld, your Spirit flows like a great river that cannot be stopped.
A river that brings healing to broken hearts.
That offers dignity to generations and peoples long estranged.
That sparks flourishing in land and relationships long oppressed and neglected.
This imagination fuels our hope today - give us strength to carry and pursue it with care, we pray.

Amen.
