EUCHARIST INVITATION
Written by Bobbi Salkeld

Today we celebrate the Eucharist together, a sacrament of celebration.

Gathering around the elements invites us to imagine more than what is in front of us to see.

In front of us are grapes for the wine and bread made of grains from the fields. But we imagine that grapes and bread are so much more.

They are a feast Jesus has with friends who get scared. They are the fulfillment of scattered tribes gathered together after so much time apart. They are the hope for a peaceful community even when violence looms.

Maybe for you today the elements of this meal allow you to imagine restored relationships, the nearness of God in a season of doubt, or the meeting of needs and desires.

So we bring our whole selves to this story.

On the night he was betrayed,
Jesus took bread, blessed it, broke it, and said,
Eat, all of you, to remember.

The bread is a sacrament of our shared humanity.
In the same way,
Jesus took the cup, blessed it, poured it out, and said,
Drink, all of you, to reconcile.

The grape that we crush is a sacrament of our shared vitality.

Let us pray.

In the quiet, we open our hearts to the fullness of life
In its beauty and in its brutality
We share in the way of Christ.
Broken, we are being made whole.
Poured out, we are filled with joy once again.

Spirit, meet us in our need,
and meet our neighbour in their need, we pray,
Amen.
