Lesson 8: Moses sees the glory of God.

Passage: Exodus 33:12-23 - Sometime after God gives the Ten Commandments to the people of Israel from Mount Sinai, Moses has an honest discussion with God about his concerns for leading the people to the Promised Land. Moses wants to know who God will send with him to help him lead the people, and God says that God’s very own presence will go with him. Moses wants to be certain of this and so he declares that if God’s presence does not go with him, then he will not go. Moses also asks to be able to see God’s glory, and God agrees to pass by Moses and allow him to get a glimpse of God’s back, but not God’s face.

Big Idea: God’s presence goes with us.

Preliminary Discussion — Bible Story Leader

Today is the very last day that we’ll be talking about the story of Moses and the Exodus.

    • Does anyone remember some of the things that happened in the story so far? What was your favourite part?

    • Our last lesson is all about how Moses actually got to see God’s glory. Can you imagine what that would be like?

Let's watch our video to find out more about the story...

Follow Up Discussion — Bible Story Leader

    • Why do you think Moses told God that he didn’t want to go on the journey if God wasn’t with him?

    • Can you think of some times when you might feel scared or alone, and you would want God to be with you?

    • What are some things you can you do when you feel that way?

    Prayer — Bible Story Leader

“Dear God, thank you for the story we’ve been learning of Moses and the Israelites and their journey out of Egypt to get to the new home that you promised them. Thank you that we know that just like you were with the Israelites on their journey—when they were scared or lonely or hungry or thirsty—you are also always with us, through all the difficult times. Thank you that you love us and care for us. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”

Activity: Ark of the Covenant Craft — Activity Leader

Tie in the lesson to the craft by mentioning that the Israelites built something called the Ark of the Covenant, which was where God’s presence would be with them on their journey.

Using popsicle sticks and other materials, the kids can decorate a print out of the Ark of the Covenant.

If a child is not interested in the activity, allow them to move to free play.

Dismissal: Collect tags and make sure each child leaves with their caregiver.

    Preliminary Discussion —Bible Story Leader

Today is the last day of our series on Moses and the Exodus.

    • Can you guys remember some of the things that we learned from the story? What parts stood out to you the most?

Today's story will be about an encounter that Moses had with God after God had given the Ten Commandments to the Israelites on Mount Sinai. In this encounter, Moses asked God for two things before they continued on their journey.

    • Can anyone guess what those things might have been?

Let's watch our video to find out...

Follow Up Discussion — Bible Story Leader

    • Why do you think Moses would request that God’s presence go with them on the journey even though God was already with them this whole time? (Perhaps Moses was just worried about having to lead the people to a brand new land, so he needed some extra encouragement and a promise that God would never leave them)

    • Why do you think Moses asked to see God’s glory? (Moses may have needed something to give him courage, and to actually see for himself that God was with him)

    • Have you ever had times when you were feeling scared or anxious, and you just needed to know that someone was with you to get through it?

    • Do you tend to feel like God is always with you through all the good and the bad times? Why or why not?

    Prayer — Bible Story Leader

“Dear God, thank you for the story of the Exodus that we’ve been learning about. Thank you for all the things we can take away from this part of the Bible, like how you never forgot about your people in all their years of hardship in Egypt, how you saved them and brought them to a new home, how you stayed with them through thick and thin over the 40 years that they wandered in the wilderness, and how you kept your promise to make them into a great nation. Please help us to see how the Israelites’ story can also relate to us, teaching us that you are always with us whether we know it or not, and that you love, care and provides for us every step of the way. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
