Lesson 2: Mary’s song.

Passage: Luke 1:46-55 - After receiving the news from the angel that she would become the mother of the long-awaited Savior, Mary sings a song of praise to God. In it, she glorifies God for the good things God has given her, expresses humility, and extols God for bringing down rulers and lifting up the humble.

Big Idea: God lifts up the humble.

Preliminary Discussion — Bible Story Leader

Today is our second week talking about the Christmas story! In our videos we’ve been hearing about Jesus from the people who were close to him, like his best friend John. Well today we’ll be hearing about what Jesus’ own mom, Mary, has to say.

Let's watch our video to find out more...

Follow Up Discussion — Bible Story Leader

    • Can any one remember how Mary first learned that she was going to become the mom of baby Jesus?

    • How did Mary feel when she found out the news? Do you think she was surprised? What did she do?

    • Why do you think Mary was so happy and so thankful to God for choosing her to become Jesus’ mom? Do you think she expected that to happen? Why or why not?

    • Would you also be surprised if God sent an angel to tell you that you had a special mission or job to do?

    • What kind of people do you think God chooses to do important things for God’s kingdom? Only rich and powerful people? Or normal and ordinary people like Mary?

    Prayer — Bible Story Leader

"Dear God, thank you for the lesson we learned today about how you chose an ordinary girl like Mary to have be a special part of God’s mission by becoming the mother of baby Jesus. Thank you that you are a God who gives good things to those who are humble, and that each one of us can be part of God’s work in the world. In Jesus' name, Amen."

Activity: Bible Verse Craft — Activity Leader

Kids can glue the Bible verse (Luke 1:46-47) onto a blank page. They can then draw their interpretation of the story (Mary rejoicing after being chosen by God) or a picture of themselves rejoicing.

An additional colouring page will also be available.

If a child is not interested in the activity, allow them to move to free play.

Dismissal: Collect tags and make sure each child leaves with their caregiver.
