PRAYER OF CONFESSION

"We know that absolutely nothing—nothing living or dead, angelic or demonic, today or tomorrow, high or low, thinkable or unthinkable—absolutely nothing can get between us and God's love, because of the way that Jesus has embraced us." Romans 8:38-39 (The Message)

As part of our liturgy today, we are invited into a prayer of confession, a space where we do not need to hide because nothing about us can break that embrace. We confess because it is safe to name our brokenness. Because when we choose to be honest, when we are truly sorry, we are set free. We confess because we long to be made whole.

As we pray together, you will hear the Jesus prayer three times, and you are welcome to say it out loud if you'd like.

Let us pray together:
Creator God, in your loving presence, we confess:
That we allow our fears to speak louder than your love,
That our worries drive us to possess and to consume more than we need,
That we struggle to trust that you are good and that we are enough.
We want to be safe so much that we build walls that become our prisons.
God, we are poor in spirit, we have no clue, we lose our way without even realizing it.
Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on us, sinners…

Jesus, we seek your peace within and peace without, and we confess:
The wrong we have done and the good we have left undone,
The times we were unkind and impatient with those who needed our care and support,
The ease with which we hold others to a higher standard than ourselves,
Our failure to respect another's freedom to be different from us,
The carelessness of our thoughts and our words.
Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on us, sinners…

Spirit of hope, we ask you to breathe new life in us, as we confess:
That we are slow learners, who have wasted your gifts,
Participated in systems that take life instead of giving it,
Avoided the hard work of incarnated love in the places you send us to live and to work.
We do not know how to ask you for help,
And we forget that your power is the power of resurrection and life…
Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on us, sinners.

And now, hear these words of assurance:
The one who created you loves you,
Jesus gives you a new life,
And the power of the Spirit is yours to live it.
