ANCIENT PRAYER: ALL SHALL BE WELL
Written by Bobbi Salkeld

Julian of Norwich lived in the 1300s. A time of devastating sickness and war.

She narrowly escaped death as a child and then became ill at the age of 30. This time, she experienced a series of 16 revelations. Later, when she lived in a tiny room joined to a Benedictine church she wrote about her experience in a work called Revelations of Divine Love

Today, we will pray some of her most familiar words. It’s a prayer of God’s presence in our struggle.

Leader:
When Julian of Norwich prayed she asked God why sin was unavoidable.
And Jesus responded to her:
Sin is unavoidable, but -

All:
All shall be well, and
All shall be well, and
All manner of things shall be well

Leader:
And Jesus assured her,
If we never fell, we should not know how feeble we are,
and also we should not fully know the marvellous love of our Maker.

All:
The fullness of joy is to
behold God in everything

Leader:
And Julian recounted what was shown to her: that Jesus did not say,
You will never have a rough passage,
You will never be out-strained,
You will never feel uncomfortable,
But Jesus did say,
You will never be overcome.

All:
In falling and rising again
We are always kept in the same
Precious love
Amen
