PRAYER OF CONFESSION

To work at being a healthy community, we have to work at being healthy people. Health involves a level of awareness, reflection, and ruthless honesty. In just a moment, I will guide you through a prayer of confession. Prayers of confession are honest prayers. Prayers that acknowledge our part in division, in painful places, in disappointment. Thankfully, after confession, we are given words of assurance. We don’t have to be stuck; we can move on and grow with God’s help. So, I invite you to bow your head or close your eyes - do whatever it takes to pray inwardly.
Loving God, to whom all hearts are open –
We pause to reflect on the places in our lives where we are on shaky ground.
Maybe we believe that there is not enough to go around - enough love, enough attention, enough money.
Maybe we’re stuck in old stories that are holding us back - thinking that we are not good enough, that we are invisible, that we are incomplete.
Maybe we are adding something unhealthy to the life of another person - it could be negativity, insecurity, and the pain we pass off to protect our own vulnerability.
If we are aware of a place of sin and brokenness within, we take a moment to hear and to pray the ancient Jesus Prayer.
Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.
Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.
Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.
Merciful One, to whom all desires are known –
You forgive us so that we can forgive one another.
You heal us so that we can work to heal one another and to heal creation. You renew us so that we can be makers of peace.
We hear these words of assurance spoken by Jesus in the gospel of John:
If the Son sets you free, you are free indeed.
May we walk in this assurance.
AMEN.
