ADVENT CANDLE LIGHTING LITURGY
By Bobbi Salkeld

Today is the second Sunday of Advent.

The word “advent” comes from the Latin “to come.” In this season, we contemplate the ways God comes to us in human form, and what love requires from us in preparation.

We are preparing for love’s unexpected interruption.
We are preparing for love’s unguarded vulnerability.
We are preparing for love’s open arms.

It can be easy to think that Advent’s preparation means performance, but Advent’s mystery has more to do with showing up, staying open, and paying attention.

Breathe in love. Exhale more love.

Today we light the second candle of Advent: the candle of Love.

Let us pray.

God of all who prepare,
give us your loving word for our soul this Advent.
We know something of your delight in creation, your trust in all you have made, and the ways you prepare us for the possibility of what comes next.
Come to us with your love in our need and in our gratitude.
Amen.
