ALL SAINTS RESPONSIVE READING
Written by Bobbi Salkeld

This week is Halloween. And Halloween is also known as All Hallow’s Eve – the eve before All Saints Day.

All Saints Day is a time in the liturgical calendar dedicated to remembering the dead. This includes loved ones who have passed, martyrs of the faith, saints of a centuries-old tradition.

So, we’re borrowing the prayers of the past to shape our prayers for today. I’ll read a portion of a prayer and then I invite you to echo parts of that prayer with me - your words will be yellow on the screen.
Let us pray.

A prayer of Symeon the New Theologian (949-1022) –
In silence.
Lower your head, shut your eyes,
breathe out gently and imagine yourself looking into your own heart.
Carry your mind, i.e. your thoughts,
from your head to your heart.
As you breathe out, say, ‘Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me.’

Together we pray:
Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me.

A prayer of Anselm (c. 1033-1109) –
Almighty and tender Lord Jesus Christ,
just as I have asked you to love my friends
so I ask the same for my enemies.
You alone, Lord, are mighty. You alone are merciful.
You who are the true light, lighten their darkness.
You who are the whole truth, correct their errors.
You who are the incarnate word, give life to their souls.
Let them be reconciled with you, and through you reconciled to me.

Together we pray:
Let my enemies be reconciled with God,
and through God reconciled to me.

A prayer by Mechtild of Magdeburg (1210-80) –
I cannot dance, O Lord, unless you lead me.
If it is your will, I can leap with joy.
But you must show me how to dance and sing
by dancing and singing yourself!
With you I will leap towards love,
and from love I will leap to truth,
and from truth I will leap to joy,
and then I shall leap beyond all human senses.
There I will remain and dance forevermore.

Together we pray:
O Lord, with you,
we remain and dance forevermore.
AMEN.
