RESPONSIVE PRAYER
Written by Bobbi Salkeld
Every year, we round the corner into Lent with hope that this season will help us with the spiritual practice of letting go.
Christians around the world begin this journey today, reminded that there will come a time when we let go of life: from dust we came and to dust we shall return.
Please join me in a responsive prayer to prepare for the symbolic imposition of ashes. I’ll read the LEADER sections. You read the ALL sections.
Let us pray.
--
Leader:
Creator, no matter the stories we’ve been consumed by this winter,
tonight we draw near to the clarifying symbol of ashes.
Ashes stand for humility, death, and renewal.
All:
God, interrupt our distraction with the reminder
we are but dust.
Leader:
Jesus, we seek your path this Lent.
Yours is a path leading through death to springtime new life.
The cross is our destination, and we do not shy away from your suffering.
All:
God, interrupt our pain with the reminder
we are but dust.
Leader:
Spirit, you breathe divine breath into the dust that we are.
All things find animation in holy life.
The capacity we have to reflect, repent, and change is a gift, and we receive it.
All:
God, interrupt our boredom with the reminder
we are but dust.
Amen.
