Lesson 4: God’s promise to Abraham.

Passage: Genesis 15:1-6 - God appeared to Abraham and told him not to be afraid for God was his shield and his great reward. Abraham asked what God could possible give him since he was childless and his inheritance would go to a servant in his household. God responded that this would not happen, but that Abraham would have a son who would become his heir. God told Abraham to look up at the sky and try to count the stars, for his offspring would be as numerous as the stars in the sky. Abraham trusted and believed in God’s promise to him.

Big Idea: God’s promises are true.

Preliminary Discussion — Bible Story Leader

Today is our last day learning about the story of Abraham.

First we learned that God told Abraham to move to a new country with his family and Abraham trusted God even though he was probably nervous or afraid.

Then, when Abraham and his family arrived in their new home, Abraham thanked and praised God for how far God had taken him.

Last week we learned about how there was an argument between Abraham's working and his nephew Lot's workers, and how they solved their problem by giving each other more space.

Today is the last day and we will be learning about a big promise that God made to Abraham. Let's watch our video to find out more...

Preliminary Discussion — Bible Story Leader

Today is the last day of our series on Abraham. Can anyone remember what has happened in the story so far?

First, God appeared to Abraham and told him to move to a new country that God would show him.

Then, once he and his family arrived in their new home, Abraham made an altar to thank and praise God for bringing him safely to their destination.

Lastly, we learned that Abraham and his nephew Lot were both shepherds and that their workers started arguing. The solution that Abraham suggested was to give each other space by living in different parts of the land.

Today, for our last lesson on Abraham, we'll be learning about the great promise, also known as a covenant, which God made to Abraham. Let's watch our video to find out more...

    • What was the promise that God made to Abraham? How did Abraham respond to God's promise?

    • How did God end up keeping God's promise in the end?

    • Do you find it easy or difficult to dream big in your life? If you truly believed that God was on your side and that anything was possible, what would be your big dream?

    Prayer — Bible Story Leader

"Dear God, thank you for the story we learned today about the promise you made to Abraham to give him a child and make his descendants into a great nation. Even though it seemed impossible due to his and Sarah's old age, he trusted in you to fulfill your promise to him. Please help us to dream big in our lives, knowing that you are with us, empowering us, and that with you, all things are possible. In Jesus' name, Amen."
