Lesson 3: The mystery of the blind man.

Passage: Luke 18:35-43 - Once when Jesus came to Jericho, there was a blind man sitting on the roadside begging. He heard the noise of the crowds and asked what was happening. When he was told that Jesus was passing by he started to shout at the top of his lungs, “Jesus, son of David, have mercy on me.” He was told to be quiet, but shouted all the more. Jesus took notice of him, stopped, and called him over to him. When Jesus asked what he could do for the man, he asked for his sight. Jesus healed him on the stop and said that his faith had healed him.

Big Idea: Jesus has a heart for all.

For Teachers:

Lesson plan.

  • Welcome — Activity Leader

Have the children sit in a circle on the circle time rug. Welcome them to class and introduce yourselves.

Warm Up Activity: Guess the Object — Activity Leader

There will be a box containing a variety of different objects. Ask for volunteers to come up one at a time, put their hand in the bag, and hold one object. They can feel it with their hand but can’t look, and their goal is to guess what it is.

Preliminary Discussion — Bible Story Leader

Today we’re going be learning about another one of Jesus miracles and solving the mystery of what the miracle means for us.

Last Sunday we learned about a miracle where Jesus healed a little boy who was very sick. His dad worked in the palace for the king, but even though his dad was very rich and powerful, he turned to Jesus for help and realized that Jesus’ power came from God.

Today we’re going to learn about a time when Jesus healed a blind man so that he could see again.

Let’s watch our video to find out more about the story…

Follow Up Discussion — Bible Story Leader

    • Does anyone remember what the blind man was doing at the beginning of the story?

    • What did the people do when they saw him begging?

    • What did the man do when he found out that Jesus was there?

    • What did the other people around him say when they heard him screaming? How did Jesus react to him?

    • What do you think we can learn from this story about how Jesus wants us to treat others?

    Prayer — Bible Story Leader

“Dear God, thank you for this story we learned today about how you healed a blind man, who nobody else seemed to care about. Thank you that you have such a big heart for all of us, and that you love us and care for us, even when we feel left out or ignored by others. Please help us to have the same heart for people, to see them the way you see them, and love them the way you love them. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”

Activity: Blind Man Mask — Activity Leader

There will be cut out templates provided for the mask and eyes. The kids can colour in the faces and eyes, and then stick them together.

If a child is not interested in the activity, allow them to move to free play.

Thank you that this story shows us your heart for people, especially those on the margins, and how you desire to heal us both inside and out. Please help us to have the same heart as Jesus for those who are left out, so that we can show your welcoming love to others. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
