Lesson 4: The mystery of the ten men.
Passage: Luke 17:11-19 - Once when Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem, he went into a village where ten men with leprosy (a skin disease causing sores to appear all over their bodies) met him. They cried out to Jesus to have mercy on them. Jesus told them to go back to their communities and show themselves to the priests. As they went along, they were healed. One man, a Samaritan, seeing that he was healed, went back to Jesus, praising God and throwing himself at Jesus’ feet in thanks. Jesus asked about where the other nine were and why only one, a foreigner, had returned. He told the man to go in peace and that his faith had healed him.
Big Idea: Jesus heals bodies and hearts.

Preliminary Discussion — Bible Story Leader
Today we’re going be learning about another one of Jesus miracles and solving the mystery of what the miracle means for us.
Last Sunday we learned about a miracle where Jesus healed a blind man by giving him his sight back. We learned from that story that God cares about people who are feeling left out, just like the blind man who was being ignored by everyone until Jesus noticed him.
Today we’re going to learn about a time when Jesus healed ten men who all had the same problem… they were covered in owies all over their bodies.
Let’s watch our video to find out more about the story…

Follow Up Discussion — Bible Story Leader
Does anyone remember from the story what problem the 10 men had?
Do you remember what the story said about how other people thought of those men?
What did those men do when they saw Jesus? And how did Jesus end up helping them?
How many of those men went back to Jesus to thank him? What was something that we learned about that man?
Why do you think the Samaritan man was so thankful to Jesus?
What are some ways that we can help take care of each other’s hearts?
Prayer — Bible Story Leader
“Dear God, thank you for this story we learned today about how you healed a ten men who were hurting both in their bodies and in their hearts. Thank you that we know that you are a God who loves us and cares about every part of our lives, both inside and out. Thank you that you are a God who heals us in all the ways that we are hurting. Please help us to show the same love and kindness to others too. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”

Preliminary Discussion — Bible Story Leader
Today is week 4 of our series on Jesus’ miracles. So far we’ve learned about how Jesus made coins appear from the mouth of a fish, how he healed a very sick boy, and how he gave sight to a blind man.
Today’s miracle is all about a time when Jesus healed 10 men who had a skin disease that caused them to have sores all over their bodies, and because of it, they were treated like outsiders by society.
Let’s watch the video to find out more about the story…

Follow Up Discussion — Bible Story Leader
Can anyone remember how it was that Jesus healed the 10 men who had sores all over their bodies?
Can you think of why Jesus might have deciding to heal them in this way even though we know that he definitely has the power to heal them immediately?
How many of the ten men ended up going back to Jesus to thank him? What was different about this particular man?
Do you think that being a Samaritan or foreigner might have played a role in his decision to thank Jesus? How so?
What are some ways that you can think of that we can follow Jesus’ example of caring for people’s hearts?
