PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Written by Scott Wall
This prayer is derived from the writings of Saint Ephrem the Syrian (4th century CE)

God,
Creator, Renewer, and Source of all things —
We are seen and known by You - there is no need to be afraid.
And so we take up words that are true and near to us -
and We confess all the ways we are indifferent to our world.
The ways that our hearts are hard, worn down and calloused.
The ways that we are cynical and apathetic to the needs of others, the opinions of others, the plight of others.

And we pray,
Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.

We confess the ways our hearts grow faint.
The ways we wander from what we know is best.
The ways we distract and numb our truest selves.
The ways we give in to negativity and pessimism that wear us down.

And we pray,
Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.

And we confess the ways we use our strength.
All the ways we harm in what we do - and what we refuse to do.
The ways we use power to protect and defend the insecure places deep in us.
The ways we speak idle words, critical words, untruthful words.

And we pray,
Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.

Lord have mercy.
Christ have mercy.
Lord have mercy.
Amen.
