RESPONSIVE READING
Written by Bobbi Salkeld
In just a moment we will join our voices together for a responsive reading. For this reading, we borrow the prayers of the past to shape our prayers for today. So, I’ll read a portion of a prayer and then I’ll invite you to echo parts of that prayer with me. Let us pray.
A prayer by Augustine of Hippo (354-430)
Almighty God, in whom we live and move and have our being, you have made us for yourself,
so that our hearts are restless till they rest in you. And together we pray:
Our hearts are restless till they rest in you.
A prayer by Hildegard of Bingen (1098 - 1179)
Jesus Christ, the love that gives love, You are higher than the highest star; You are deeper than the deepest sea; Let all the world worship you. And together we pray:
Let all the world worship you.
A prayer by Sadhu Sundar Singh (1889 - 1929)
My Lord God, my all in all, Life of my life, and Spirit of my spirit, look in mercy on me and so fill me with your Holy Spirit. From you I ask not for the world or its treasures, neither do I beg for heaven. I desire and long for you alone, and where you are, there is heaven. And together we pray:
Where you are, there is heaven.
And finally, a community prayer from Christ Church Cathedral in Vancouver.
Holy and compassionate God: so direct our strength and inspire our weakness that we may enter with power into the movement of your whole creation towards wholeness, justice and peace. And together we pray:
Direct our strength towards wholeness, justice and peace. Amen.
