THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy Name. Thy Kingdom come. Thy will be done. On earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever.

REFLECTIVE PRAYER

Sometimes new seasons and beginnings require new ways of speaking.
In fact, when I started seminary, I was startled by my language. I realized I needed bigger ways of speaking to and about God. I reached for books with words I could hardly pronounce, I mumbled ancient prayers from prayer collections, I read poems to name the beauty of the human experience.
Nothing was off limits in my quest for new language to speak to and about God.
For our time of prayer tonight, I invite you to explore new ways of speaking about and to God.
Let’s trust that God welcomes our play with language and that God can meet us as we fumble with words in our mouths and phrases in our hearts. Listen for what sticks out to you and to let go of what doesn’t connect.
Let us pray.
God we come to you, and some of us need to be reminded of your
Power, praise-worthiness, authority
We need to trust that you are in control
That you are above all
That you know all
But some of us come to you and we need to be reminded of your
Vulnerability, gentleness, meekness
We need to trust that you will not bully us
That you will be patient with us
That you put trust in us
God our father, God our mother
God our strength, God our softness
God our lord, God our love
We pause now to listen for a creative word from you.
A word to calm the chaos or disturb the numbness.
A holy word to carry us or a creaky word to leave behind.
[pause]
Jesus as we sit with you, some of us need to hear you speak a word of
Correction, challenge, strength
We need to be shocked by the truth of our lives
That you have made us for more
That love is hard at work in our story
But many of us come to you and need to be reminded of your
Friendship, humour, playfulness
We need to be soothed by the truth of your life
That you have always been with us
That you will never leave us
Jesus our teacher, Jesus the listener
Jesus our healer, Jesus the broken one
Jesus our life, Jesus our death
We pause now to remember your story of life, death, and resurrection.
Is there a part of your life we need to zoom in on tonight?
How does your story cross paths with our own?
[pause]
Holy Spirit, as we wait for you, some of us need an experience of your
Persistence, passion, newness
We need to be blown over by your call in our lives
To take a road less travelled
To welcome wild transformation in our lives
But many of us need something more like
Comfort, reassurance, kindness
We need to be held in the calm of the Spirit’s care
Hoping that our fears will not overtake us
Hoping that the best in our imagination will be just the very beginning
Spirit our source, Spirit our breath
Spirit our disturbance, Spirit our comfort
Spirit the stranger, Spirit our friend
We pause now to listen to our feelings with you as our guide.
Show us our desolation, loneliness, anxiety
Show us our consolation, relief, support
[pause]
We close with this grace:
The grace of Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the bond of the Holy Spirit, be with us all forever and ever. AMEN.
