PRAYER FOR PLACE
Written by Bobbi Salkeld
It’s nearly Canada Day.
And in light of the many cultural moments we are living in - a pandemic, the struggle for racial justice, what it means to be global neighbours - let us join our hearts together in a Prayer for Place.
Creator God,
we look around at the places where we live -
Homes,
which can be spaces of rest and play,
but also spaces of anxiety and conflict.
Neighbourhoods,
which can be communities of belonging,
but also resist generosity and welcome.
Nations,
which can work to protect the vulnerable,
but also favour those with power and wealth.
Creator God, awaken us to your love,
Make our dwellings places of your delight.
Liberator Christ,
we notice our need for placemaking -
At home,
where our truest self can feel rooted,
where our tables, backyards, are bedrooms are places where we flourish.
In communities,
where we extend the bonds of love outside our walls and gates,
where we welcome others as you welcomed all without reservation.
In bordered spaces,
where we contribute to the good of others,
where we build systems that are just and equitable.
Liberator Christ,
Alert us to your incarnation which makes all the ground on which we stand holy.
Instructing Spirit,
we lean with hope towards a commonwealth of place -
Dwellings,
where there is room for renewal in our closest relationships,
where our prayers draw us to new ways of being whole.
City streets,
where we respect all people for who they are and what they need,
where we celebrate difference and take time to hear each human story.
Countries,
where leaders are connected to compassion,
where collaboration and peacemaking are what truly set us free.
Instructing Spirit,
Breath new life into the places where we live.
You dwell with us, for which we say thank you and AMEN.
