PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Written by Scott Wall

The practice of confession is an vital part of the Christian experience.
Where in liturgy, and quiet conversation, and trusted spaces —
Saints and sinners alike have always used words to make the world right.

Because confession - in its purest form - is simply telling the truth.
About our mistakes.
About our deepest feelings.
About our hope that things might change.

So - as part of our liturgy today -
I invite you to join in a prayer of confession.
With words spoken honestly, in hope that forgiveness and renewal might begin their work again.

As we pray, I will use the words of the Jesus prayer as reprise
Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner. And I invite you to pray those aloud if you would like. Let us pray.

God - creating, saving, sustaining presence that holds all things -
To you our hearts are open —And we confess our missteps and our misjudgments.
Our impatience and our hurtful words.
Our neglect, our selfishness, our superficiality.
Our avoidance of what must be done - what should be done - what we know is best.Even as we pray
Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.

God, our interior lives are no secret to you.
So we speak our deepest feelings honestly.
We confess the anxiety that weighs us down.
We confess the resentment we hold against others, and against ourselves for mistakes made.
We confess the fear that we don’t matter - that we haven’t done enough - that we aren’t good enough.

Even as we pray
Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.

God, all our desire and longing are known to you.
So we name them truthfully.
We confess our longing for intimate, trusting relationships.
We confess our longing for relief in our bodies and our minds.
We confess our hope that peace would come in your world - to every place where unrest and disaster harm.

Even as we pray
Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.
Amen.
