ANCIENT PRAYER
Written by Bobbi Salkeld, adapted from 2000 Years of Prayer compiled by Michael Counsell.

Today, on the third Sunday of Lent, we borrow a prayer from the past to guide our prayers for today.

Mechtild of Magdeburg lived in the 13th century and wrote about her visions of Christ in union with creation in an account called The Flowing Light of the Godhead

I love borrowing prayers prayed over the centuries by other Christ followers who struggled, stayed true, and loved like Jesus taught them to love in their time and place. Old prayers are strange, inspiring, and diverse.

So let’s quiet our hearts, take a deep breath for our bodies, and pray this prayer of Mechtild of Magdeburg. I’ll read it, and you can grab onto a word or phrase that feels right for you today.

This is a prayer of awe.

O burning mountain, O chosen sun,
O perfect moon, O fathomless well,
O unattainable height, O clearness beyond measure,
O wisdom without end, O mercy without limit,
O strength beyond resistance, O crown of all majesty,

The humblest being you created sings your praise.

Lord, you are like a stream flowing through our bodies, a sun shining on our faces.
Let us be your reflection.

Amen.
