An Update on COVID-19
An update to the Commons community regarding COVID-19 response:
Like many in the city, we are listening to the experts from Alberta Health Services regarding the appropriate steps to protect the public health in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Our team will be meeting tomorrow to assess the new recommendations from AHS and their impact on Commons, and we will have an update tomorrow on the plans for Sunday.
While panic, fear, racism, or the stockpiling of supplies all run counter to the public good, please continue to do everything you can to protect the public health. This includes limiting contact if you are sick, washing hands regularly and thoroughly, and, where possible, keeping some distance from others.
However, if I could speak pastorally for a moment, I have also noticed that a new term has also entered our public consciousness this week: "social distancing." While I understand the messaging behind this term, I do also believe that language has a profound power to shape our view of the world. While some physical space between us might be healthy right now, the last thing we need is to "distance" ourselves from each other and from those most vulnerable in a time of need.
Our nearness in care and concern is part of the social fabric that binds communities of faith together. And so while you take precautions to protect your self and family, I would also encourage you to check in on neighbours, offer to pick up groceries for those who are isolated and to be creative in how you can maintain "social connection" during this time.
Grace and peace.
