    RELFECTIVE PRAYER
    Written by Alexandra Chubachi

As we begin a reflective prayer together I would like to invite you to find a seat.

Whenever I read that Psalm I read earlier, “I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made” I get a very vivid flashback to a precise moment and feeling. The moment is me, seventeen, standing in front of a mirror. The feeling is something like desperation. I had felt so deeply dissatisfied with myself, both externally and internally, for so many years and I was tired of it. I remember standing in front of the mirror repeating those words over and over, hoping that they would become my internal monologue rather than only the negativity that I could manage.

Now, it wasn’t a magic incantation that solved my broken identity. Getting to a place where I have felt worthy and unconditionally loved has been…is a lifelong journey. But that moment of repetition ingrained something in me for when I can’t muster up the truth for myself. A poet from a few thousand years ago cries out the same need for affirmation that I have today, and the God of the universe affirms that there is nothing too dark or unlovable about me. When we think “surely the darkness will hide us”, God says: oh you, you are beautiful and wonderful.

In a moment I am going to pray. And I am going to leave some moments of pause. And in those moments I am going to bring forward a question or I am going to ask you to pray on our own. And I invite you to engage as little or much as you feel led.

So I want you to get comfortable, slow your breathing, maybe put a hand on your chest, and pray with me.

Divine Christ, we are often battered by the unpredictability of our own internal monologues. Our emotions, our triggers, and sometimes even the people around us can tell us that we are not enough, too broken or unlovable. Yet, you are constant in your love for us. So, God, we ask you to show us:

What is an area of our identity where we need your healing?

    [moment of pause]

Sometimes it is too hard for us to speak goodness and truth to ourselves. In these moments, we trust that you will speak truth to us. God, would you give us a word of truth for how you feel about us?

    [moment of pause]

God of endless, far-reaching love, would you help us trust the way you see us? Would you help us see that we don't have to have the final word on our identity? We trust in your love.

    [moment of pause]

    Amen.
