Lesson 1: Water into wine.

Passage: John 2:1-11 - Jesus’ very first miracle, as recorded by the Gospel of John, was changing water into wine at a wedding he attended in Cana. Jesus was reluctant to perform this miracle at first, as he did not want to draw the wrong kind of attention to himself this early into his public ministry. However, upon his mother’s request, he did perform this miracle, though he did so in a secretive way so that only his disciples knew what had happened, and as a result, put their faith in him. This miracle reveals that Jesus has power over the created world, and hints at his divine sonship.

Big Idea: Jesus is God’s son.

Preliminary Discussion — Bible Story Leader

Today we will be learning something new. The last couple of Sundays we’ve been talking about the stories of Jesus, but now we’re going to talk about some of Jesus’ miracles, which are some of the really cool and amazing things Jesus did.

Today we’ll learn about Jesus’ very first miracle in the Bible, turning water into a special drink called wine, which is kind of like grape juice.

Let’s watch our video to find out more about the story…

Follow Up Discussion — Bible Story Leader

    • If your parents gave you water, do you think you could change it into juice?

    • What do you think about the story that Jesus turned water into a special drink called wine, which is kind of like grape juice? Do you think that’s pretty cool?

    • If ordinary people like you and me can’t change water into something else, why do you think Jesus could?

    Prayer — Bible Story Leader

“Dear God, thank you for sending your Son Jesus to us, who has the power to do miracles like turning water into wine. Thank you that Jesus loves us and uses his power to do good things, like helping people and giving the people at the wedding more wine to drink when they had no more left. We pray that we will get to know you better through Jesus, not just because of the cool things that you can do, but because you love and care for us. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”

Preliminary Discussion — Bible Story Leader

Today we’ll be starting a brand new series. For the past couple of weeks we were talking about some of the stories that Jesus told, but now we’re going to talk about some of his miracles.

    • Today we’re going to be learning about the very first miracle that Jesus did. Can anyone guess what it was?

Jesus’ first miracle took place at a wedding where everyone was celebrating and drinking something called wine, which is kind of like grape juice. However, at some point, the wine ran out and Jesus’ mom, Mary, told him about it.

Follow Up Discussion — Bible Story Leader

    • Have you ever seen or heard of a miracle that happened to you or someone you know?

    • Do you think that just anyone can do miracles or do you have to be a pretty special person?

    • How did Jesus’ disciples react when they saw the miracle Jesus performed?

    • What do you think this miracle of turning water into wine says about Jesus? (That he has power over nature, and can do things that only God can do)

    Prayer — Bible Story Leader

“Dear God, thank you for the story we heard today about Jesus’ very first miracle of turning water into wine at a wedding in Cana. Thank you that through this miracle story and the others that we’ll be learning about, we can discover more about who Jesus really is, and we can start to put our faith in him just like the first disciples did. We pray that we’ll keep our eyes open to see the littles miracles that you are still doing today all around us and in our own lives. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”

Activity: Water to Wine Paper Towel Trick — Activity Leader

Give students each a folded paper towel, a black sharpie, and washable red markers. Show the students with the example provided how to make a wine glass or jug.

Once the art is complete, have the students gently dip the paper towel into the shallow tray of water and complete their trick.

Dismissal: Collect tags and make sure each child leaves with their caregiver.
