Becoming King
The Story David
Few characters rival David in the Hebrew bible’s long list of heroes.
He rises from obscurity, subdues Israel’s enemies, survives death threats, and eventually takes the throne. Along the way, the ancient authors encourage us to support this guy. He’s the underdog, overlooked, and the one God chooses.
Which is what makes David’s story simultaneously so interesting and confounding.
We want him to win, but questions emerge as we watch him become king.
Why are we so surprised when good people do bad things?
What is it about power that taints the best of us?
“Absolute power corrupts absolutely.”
David’s life is the perfect case study. Once a humble shepherd, a warrior with integrity, a man after God’s own heart—his rise to power was meteoric. But once he sat on the throne, something changed. Power reshaped him. His choices had devastating consequences, not just for himself, but for his family and his nation.
